Get ready for spring and summer sports!

Lounging around in the winter months may be just what you needed when it was cold – but now it is time for some spring and summer fun, with your favorite warm-weather sports. It is an unfortunate fact that no matter what sport you enjoy being a part of, there is always the potential for injury. However, you can decrease the odds of getting hurt (and make sure you have fun) by following a few simple tips.

Wear the right protective gear

Injuries can happen even if you’re just playing a friendly game. Don’t skip getting the right equipment for your sport (such as shin guards for soccer), to save lots of pain and trouble later.

Warm up and cool down

Even when you are playing for fun, things can get intense. Warming up before playing increases blood to the muscles, makes you more flexible, and loosens up the joints, all of which can help your body cope with all of the sudden movements that are often a part of playing a sport. Don’t forget to cool down afterwards, too, to allow your body to get rid of lactic acid, which can cause muscle aches and stiffness.

Work out when you’re not playing

A good way to prevent injury on the field is to make sure you are in good shape before you even get into the game. A fitness plan that includes cardiovascular exercise, strength training, and exercises to increase your flexibility will not only help to decrease your odds of getting injured, but it may also help you to play better.

Get enough sleep

This may not even seem relevant to playing a sport, but it is. Playing while tired makes it difficult to react quickly, which can cause injury. Getting a good night’s sleep after the game is also important – it gives tired and damaged muscles a chance to recover.

No matter how well prepared you are, sometimes the unexpected can happen and injuries can occur. If you get injured, or if playing your favorite sport starts to become too painful, Sports Occupational and Knee Surgery in San Antonio, TX, can help. Call (210) 696-9000 for an appointment today!
